Spring In Kefalonia

In Spring Greece is a tapestry of wild flowers, Anemones, Diasies , wild Iris, Poppies and Tulips. All these flowers are like a carpet on the ground, below the olive trees and sprawling over walls. Greece is far richer in flowers than any other European country, with more than 6,000 species as against 2,300 in Britain. These flowers are the same as in ancient times. The relationship between plants and human is evident in Greek mythology. Various trees, shrubs, herbs, grains, flowers, and fruit appear in myths and legends as general symbols of rebirth and immortality.

In Spring Kefalonia is covered with flowers , the widespread Spanish broom, to the beautiful mauve lilies and some species of rare wild orchids. The best time to see them is from late March through to April into May although the season lasts longer around the top of Mount Aenos. 

Orchids are prominent amongst the spring flora and some 31 different species have been recorded.
